Lady Knights Suffer Bad Loss to Union County

By Matt Haynes | May 1, 2024 9:00 AM

The Lady Knights travelled to Liberty and lost 3-2 to Union County. "It felt like the steps we took forward last week, we lost a few today. We had situations where we didn't play our hardest, from top to bottom, and motivation and attitude was just not there. We were up in matches and on a couple occasions our girls lost track of games and points they won and we cost ourselves points and games and sets that we actually won but didn't know the score because we weren't mentally focused. Several games we were up 40-15, 30-0 in games and then we would just stop hitting the ball or repeating mistakes that we have practiced to avoid, like not going to net to finish points, being too slow in going to the net, not hitting the ball with pace, not having the racquet in the right position on backhands or overheads, feet out of position, double faults in key moments, not putting the ball away at angles on easy net shots, and hitting easy and slow shots continuously at opponents. We just need to FINISH points. Our intensity should be on every point, but we have mental lapses, we had leads that we gave away, big points that we just made bad decisions on and let them win. I'm frustrated for the girls, because I know they can win, but when they get in a position to win, we sabotage ourselves and stop playing to win by playing not to lose. We've got to get the mentality that WE win points, not just hope the opponent makes mistakes so that we win. Despite this, we hopefully learned something tonight, we will go back to work, and that's all we can do. It's up to us to be mentally tougher, energized, and ready to make the choice to play like we should play and win," said Coach Haynes. The Knights fall to 6-3 overall, 2-2 non-conference, and 4-1 in the TEC.
